Thomas and anyone else,

I've been playing with the reports feature. Cool stuff! Created a report in the report designer, bound it to one of the objects I created and it displays the data, etc. No issue there.

The report name shows up on the grid for the Analysis icon. I have reports checked for the object and for the software program.

I save everything and Create the software. No issues.

Once done, I install (or reinstall) the newly created software and then run it. When I go to the Analysis page, the report I previously created (in Model mode) doesn't show up. Did I do something wrong to make it not show up?

What I wanted to do was create a report, have it available with the software, and distribute it to a customer for them to run. When they enter records into the object they can then run a report to display, print, export, etc the information. Am I not doing the right steps to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Thomas,

Additional update:

In Model mode I saved a report I created into the .repx format.

When I run the software (after it's been Created and Installed as a user would), I select the Analysis icon and New. Up pops the box asking for a report name and data type. I enter values and go to the report designer page. From there I open the saved report file and it is displayed to me in the report designer window. But when I save it, I get the error below.

I guessing this method is probably not the correct way to pull up a saved report?

Thanks,
Rick

I am lost now, Rick.

I thought you weren't able to pull up saved reports.

Why don't we concentrate on one thing at a time here.

Was the program installed prior to you creating reports?

Yes it was. I created a number of objects, installed the program, ran the program like a customer would, checked out things, etc.

Then went back into modeling mode (by clicking Model), ticked the Reports checkbox and selected Software Objects and clicked on the specific object I want reports for and ticked Reports/Charts. I then save everything, and clicked Run Software. from there I worked through the reports designer, etc util I was happy with the format. When I saved the report (from the Report Designer menu bar) and back out to the Analysis page, the new report shows up in the grid area for Analysis. I can back out of Analysis, go back in and the report I created still shows up in the grid area. I double click it and it is displayed in Preview mode. Everything seems fine at this point. image1.jpg shows the Analysis grid and the report entry.

I then move over to Create Setup and create a new vesion of the program. I run the install. Once up and running, I click on Analysis and the report I created isn't there in the grid area. image2.jpg is showing this. I can click New but then I have to go through the new report setup, etc.

Hopefully this is a better explanation of my first post. The second post was a follow on update so let's ignore that for now. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks,
Rick

No data will be updated after you install the software.

That means reports as well.

OK, thanks.

Does changing the version number allow new data or a new report to be added after the software has been installed?

Just trying to figure out how to distribute enhancements if the enhancement is a new report.

Thanks,
Rick

No, there is no way to change data once it is installed.

How would you know if your customers have already changed the report? They would be pretty mad if you change it with an update after they changed it.

Good point. I was looking at it from the perspective of creating some reports that are distributed with a program that a customer would run and print out. Not that they would go into the report designer and modify. But of course they can since the report designer is available to them.

Question 1) What if I create a report, distribute it with some software and down the road I find it it's not working properly and I need to fix it. I've sold it to 100 customers. How do I get the report fix to them? Do I send them a new .repx file that has the fixed report?

Question 2: How about the scenario where you want to provide a new report (a new enhancement) for an existing program? Let's say a report for a different object's data values that was not previously reported on.

How would I distribute that enhancement? Do I create a new version of the program that includes that new report? Say version 1.0.0.01 to 1.0.0.02. Since it is new report or new "data" and hasn't been installed yet, it should show up for the customer when they install version .02, correct?

As stated before, you can't update data or reports after it is installed.

You will have to show them how to correct the error or test it thoroughly before releasing it. ;)

Your customers would not like the idea of you changing their data around.
