View Full Version : Hey Thomas as far as file size goes

is there a way to further reduce the file size? Like to remove certain options from the software perhaps?

I just did a basic software project with a couple text boxes, combo boxes, and a web browser and its 20 mb

Now not really knowing much about software I don't know if thats considered small or not, but I'm just thinking for when I host the software on my server, if it gets a lot of downloads, it might chew through bandwidth pretty fast vs a "skinnier" version of like 5 - 10 mb?

Just wondering!

In the meantime I'll probably just upload files to download.com and have them be the download site so eliminate the bandwidth worry :-)

Hi Dexx,

No the size is pretty much going to be 20 mb no matter what you add as far as windows or property editors. If you add records with lots of pictures the size will increase.

I haven't had any problems with people downloading that size of a file and I sold quite a few software programs.

Thomas:)
Dexx asked about file size and you answered they will be about 20mb.
I have created a TSB Pro application and its 89mb. It has 103 files. That seems like an excess.
What size applications are you creating yourself?

Hi fortesque,
Is the 89 mb the size of the .exe file you've created or the size of the .tsb file. One of my apps had a .tsb file size of 103 mb, but after creating a web setup and using maximum compression it ended up being about 34 mb.

Like Thomas said above if you have a lot of data and pics that you've used for testing in association with the .tsb file then the .exe file will grow correspondingly.

Hope this helps, :D
Cheers

Jim: :)
I screwed up by using an application made under an earlier TSBPro version. Today I created a new experimental program using current version of TSBPro and the .exe when zip'd runs about 30mg. That seems a lot more reasonable. And it downloads ok from a protected directory on my host server. Must have left my brains under the Christmas tree. I'll redo the application I need by creating another software application with the latest TSBPro version.
Thanks for your heads up.

Most of your application sizes should be in the 30 mg range. It depends on how much you save within the application. Pictures will increase the size substantially.

Also, the type of installation will matter. If you are creating a cd installation then it would be a lot larger than a web exe.

Hi guys,
I feel Even 20mb is too large, how come many advanced software are 5mb or less elsewhere!

I tried something - actually nothing and setup.exe was 32mb - -this is too big. Is it because of Installaware or something ?

I feel admin should do something about this !

Hmmm... I have seen a few of your posts and they are quite demanding as to what we should do...

I have a feeling that this program isn't for you.

Please email your paypal address and receipt to support@profittigersystems.com and I can refund you since this product doesn't seem to work for you.

Besides, if you have windows popping up then you DO have something regardless if you created any Software Objects.

Thanks,

Thomas

zeescripts,

If you want a tight script (for a small download) buy Delphi and start from scratch. Not only will it be smaller, you can write custom scripts that get real specialized... of course, it will take you a lot longer! And you'll have to put on your well-experienced programmer's hat, if you have one. (If you don't have one, you can hire one. Not cheap.)

Tiger is great for cranking out a basic database program really fast. I cranked out a rather involved collector management application over the weekend during breaks from other activities. That's where Tiger pays!

There are technical "runtime" reasons that the base tiger app has so much, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is what you can do. You can do a lot, and it all shows up in the runtime.

If your needs are all about small setup file sizes Thomas is right, maybe Tiger is not for you.

Admin has a name, i told you. All your posts refer to Admin.
YES, he is Admin, but please be more polite and use his name.
I agree with Thomas (ADMIN) in that you do not know what you
are talking about.
One of the most widely used DATABASE PROGRAMS is
Sage ACT! Pro 2011 and THAT is only a mere 563MB
But don't worry, the Service pack update is 85mb.

With todays technology and the requirements of things
like Netframework(you know the size of this)...what about
another 20mb for adobe reader,...you KNOW???

I have seem some of those 5mb Visual Basic crap...and they
do not have powerful networking and audit trail capabilities.
20-50mb today? SORRY....but that is minimum in most things
i install....take care,
Robbie

HAHA I almost said something about Act!. I couldn't believe the size of that behemoth. :)

She is comparing this to Visual Basic 6 stuff which isn't available any longer.

Very good points Rich. Delphi would be great for her. I think she was interested in apps that people built using Visual Basic 6.
