I work for a big corporation.

I am always seeing all kinds of inefficiencies on the desktop software and processes.

Wouldn't I have a major unfair advantage if I studied those process very well since I live those processes. Then created a program or two that increased efficiency, then began using those programs at work then let my coworkers use them then get feedback and improve them then give out the enhanced and updated programs then if the program is a hit that solves some universal issues I could offer the company a site or multi-site license, using my internal case study to sell it :)

ok back to studying I go...

Great idea Pyce. I think everyone that is working should look around and see what can be improved as possible software solutions.

I would just be careful. Sometimes companies may try to state that it was created on the job and therefore their property.

Hmm good point about possible intellectual property issues.

I did not consider that since I have an assigned laptop as my workstation and I bring it home every day.

On that note, others who attempt this, make sure you have all the bugs ironed out and fully enhanced software based on user feedback before even considering approaching management or anyone with the power to purchase your software within the company.

An alternative to your idea would to be create the solution based on your theories (what YOU think would solve the problem), THEN approach management and see if they would be interested in purchasing a discounted license with development-rights meaning that you would continue to develop the software further based on THEIR feedback and once completed, they would get a site-wide license (which works well if you sell in BLOCKS i.e. $xxxx per XX stations (computers))... making it fully known that it was all done OFF THE CLOCK and as such, they are purchasing a LICENSE ONLY, NOT ownership of any kind... This would not only allow THEM to get exactly what THEY NEED, but something YOU need/want as well - THE SALE!

Just my 2¢ but thought I would lay it out there for ya'

Also, I noticed you said "Then created a program or two"... start with just one... if you can sell your company on the first idea, accomplish and complete that one first. THEN it will be much easier to get a higher priced 2nd sale...

My cousin did this for his company and after he created 3 programs for his "then-employer", they "fired" him replaced him with someone else and sub-contracted him (my cousin) as their software provider at a mere increase of just $130,000 more than when he was their 'employee'... so I know it IS possible, VERY POSSIBLE, and you do in fact have the advantage of "insider knowledge" so if presented properly, it should be an easy sell for ya'

Your best bet is to ask your employer. My buddy did this and the boss was happy to see productivity increase. My buddy was allowed to develop the app at work and keep the rights.
