I think a customizable dashboard would be a great start screen. The dashboard could allow for multiple queries on the page such as these examples:
Any entry into 'object1' that field1(checkbox) is not checked.
Todays events in the schedule object or this week etc. (in fact this would be a great schedule view to be added)
Query of any records in 'object1' with field1 is the word PROSPECT
Last 10 entries or changed records in 'object1'
Maybe the dashboard could hold 4 panels of info. A dashboard could be an object.

Dominic,
You can make your own dasboard with relationships and customization. I have A program with that. Scheduler and three other software objects.

I believe the dashboards you speak of still exist as records though. I am suggesting to have them as an object (each dashboard their own) so the dashboard is in full view rather than a list of potential dashboards in record view.
Let me know if I misunderstood you Roland.

Dominic,
Yes, They would be software objects of the most looked at records with calendar of the day, tasks, clients, whatever. If you make all of your software objects a relationship of the main software object just a title and then take the main software Object title , and place it first then you can group and then create a tab group you can place all four of the software objects that you want to see everytime you start the software on the first page. Then you can add additional tabs above of other software objects which will open those software object. Then on the front page you can can group each software object individually, add some spacing between software objects and place a title of the software object in it. Then if you turn the tool bar off on each object it looks just like a list of files under the title. If you want to add or make a new file under a title double click it and the entry screen appears. Just some thoughts.

Dominic,
Here is a picture. Just remember that there are tabs for the other software objects above.
Hope this helps to explain.

Edited:
Dashboards offer overall views of the entire database not dependent on records (although they can be filtered based on user needs), relationships show records that offer information related to a specific record (filtered query)
Your example is one I use in creating 1-click access to other like information but do not serve the needs as a dashboard and are not customizable to the user.
I can send you examples of implementation of the two and how they are different as it sounds like your knowledge base may help build this suggested feature into a better one yet.
