I am setting up some browsers in some software that use Ebay aff urls that are over 100 characters long. So, they are getting chopped off at 100 characters. Can you make the field for urls about 150 characters in size next time you put out a new version? These urls utilize a search word and get quite lengthy, but could make us some money if people use them within our software. Thanks.

Hey Alton,
I was starting to make some links with aff urls, and they were all mixed up urls from cj.com, and I just made my own webpages and redirects using one of my domains instead. That way you are in full control of whats being shown in your software.
Like suppose ebay shuts down its aff program, your software is out there with dead links. If you use your own redirects, you can switch to another affiliate program on your redirects and push it to all the software that is out there already.

Ebay wouldn't do that...would they? Well, I guess they did. A few months ago. Messed up many of my sites that I had recently built with Ebay aff information. They have some real geniuses down there. Always muddling things up.

Great idea, Steve. Keep 'em coming!

redirect via a website is a good idea for sure! Thomas mentioned doing that in the initial video I think.

Another idea if you dont feel like doing that would be to use the TinyUrl and other similar sites to shrink down the length of the URL

Another one you can use that is free is simurl.com
They let you create your own account, create your own simurls, like
http://www.simurl.com/submit_monster (http://www.simurl.com/submit_monster) , where the end is unique to you, you just have to find a name available, and it tracks how many times its been clicked.

I have links on there more than 2 years old, but its always best to use your own domain for full control.

Hi Alton,

I could have sworn it was 200 characters. I would still recommend using a redirect so you have complete control in case the url changes. It also makes it easier to switch the content on the browser is you want to change the offer or website every month.

OK... I will admit to being VERY tired after indulging in 15 hours of NCIS (I normally watch very little TV but this was a treat... and I worked on my laptop during a lot of the day! LOL)

However... could someone talk me thru how to do this in simple terms? I am just having a problem wrapping my blonde brain around the specifics.!

Thanks!
Tink

Hello Tink,
You just make a new page for your site such as

http://yoursite.com/gotoebay.html

On the new page, just place this code...

Place the following HTML redirect code between the <HEAD> and </HEAD> tags of your HTML code.

<meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html">

The above HTML redirect code will redirect your visitors to another web page instantly. The content="0; may be changed to the number of seconds you want the browser to wait before redirecting.

Insert the intended destination, such as your Ebay aff link, into the line of code above. Save and publish. Now, just send people to your new page, which is

http://yoursite.com/gotoebay.html

and, they will be redirected to your Ebay aff site/link.

I hope this makes sense.

You can use the same technique with the banners and hyperlinks. ;)
